Save for something big

Take it step by step

People sometimes overlook how the little things add up to a big plan. Instead of being overwhelmed by the mountain in front of you, picture it as one step after the other. Mountaineers don’t make bigger strides as they conquer Everest, they just make more of them. Slow and easy can still convert big goals into reality.

You can clear the way first by simplifying your finances, to prepare for the next step. Creating an effective budget, consolidating your debts and tax effective salary packaging are other ways you can get a handle on what you can achieve, and make your goal real. Even the simplest things can make a difference. Try putting every gold coin you come across in a jar and see how quickly relatively small amounts can add up.

Give your big plan a name

Things often feel more real when we name them, such as our pets, and even our cars. Giving your plans and goals a name helps to bring them to life. It’s easy to stick a Disney Land Fund label on your saving jar or savings account. It’s also an idea to have an end date in mind, so you can keep to – or adapt – your plan.

Don’t be shy, tell the world

One way to help realise a goal is to tell people about your plan. As well as reinforcing your commitment, you might unearth advice from someone you trust who has done something similar and help you on your way. Nothing beats the voice of experience.
